Reading has tremendous power when it comes to fueling the development of all aspects of language ability, including predictor of success in life regardless of life situation.
As part of our commitment to providing opportunities for our community to read, learn and create, Whitehorse Manningham Libraries (WML) is hosting a Christmas fundraising appeal to provide gift bags of books and learning resources to children in our community experiencing disadvantage.
Why is this important?
Research shows that children experiencing disadvantage (in crisis accommodation, family violence and/or poverty) are more than twice as likely to have poor reading skills and lower levels of home reading and preschool attendance.
Children who begin school with lower literacy skills will start behind and stay behind. Poor literacy has a lifelong impact leading to poorer education, health and employment incomes. Early literacy starts at home.
That’s why supporting early literacy for children experiencing disadvantage is so important.

How to Donate
For as little as $10, you can support Whitehorse Manningham Libraries to close the gap in literacy and provide families and children in crisis to rebuild their lives. Our aim is to remove barriers, physical and perceived, to library services for people experiencing disadvantage.

Who will Receive the Gifts?
Your donations will gift each child in need, delivery of a special literacy and learning resources library bag containing high quality, age appropriate, reading materials through a partnership with Maternal Child Health in Whitehorse and Manningham as well as FVREE (Free From Domestic Violence). The fundraising for the appeal will be during the Christmas period and will be distributed throughout the year.
How will the Program be Funded?
All donated funds will solely be used to deliver Give the Gift of Reading Program, not for existing core library services and programs.

FAQs
Are donations tax deductible?
- Yes. All donations of $2 or more, are tax deductible.
- A tax receipt will be provided for donations of $2 or more.
- Cash and cheque donations may be made at any of the eight Whitehorse Manningham Library branches.
- Cheques should be made payable to Whitehorse Manningham Regional Library Corporation.
Will I receive a receipt for my donation?
- Yes, as soon as your donation is processed.
